Walter E. Abbott

1932-2026

Walter E. Abbott, 93, formerly of Gerry, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at The Star Hospice House, Lakewood, NY.

He was born on September 6, 1932 in Sugar Grove, PA, a son of the late Raymond A. and Gladys F. McGrath Abbott.

Walt attended school in Sugar Grove and was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean War.

He retired in 1996 after 43 years of service to S.M. Flickinger/Sysco Co as a truck driver.

Bowling, camping, and golfing were a few of Walt’s favorite activities that he shared with friends and family. After retiring, Walt and his wife, Betty, traveled throughout the United States before settling into Florida as their winter home, and Hidden Valley Camp ground in Kiantone, New York, as their summer residence. He also attended Kiantone Congregational Church during these years.

Walter will be remembered as a fun, loving, and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather he always was. He was immensely loved and respected by his family.

Walt is survived by his three daughters: Janis (Steven) Phillips, Joyce (Ron) Rothleder, and Jayne (Jeff Bauer) Abbott; eleven grandchildren: Garrett (Abbey) Phillips, Elise (Kahl) Counts, Clayton Phillips and Courtney (Cody) Mason; Taylor and Bailey Abbott; Mallory (Brock) McCandless, Rebecca (Jordan) Young and Madison (Adam) Goot, and Alyssa and Kimberly Abbott. Along with eleven great grandchildren: Kaylee Rein, Piper and Sadie Phillips, Arturo Counts, Fern and Faelyn Phillips, Adeline, Eliza and Isla Mason, Maren McCandless, and Riggs Goot; and a daughter-in-law Caren Harkleroad. Many nieces and nephews also survive their uncle, and great Uncle Walt.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of al most 72 years, Betty A. Williams Abbott, whom passed away on April 8, 2025; two sons, Dennis E. Abbott and W. Dean Abbott; and five siblings: Lawrence Abbott, Earl Wayne Abbott, Shirley Abbott, Philip Abbott, and Patricia McCullough.

A celebration of life for Walt and Betty will be held at a later date and announced by Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg.
