Salvatore “Sam” DeAngelo
1948-2026
Salvatore “Sam” DeAngelo
Salvatore “Sam” DeAngelo, 78, of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, died at home on June 24, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Sam was born on March 1, 1948, in Jamestown, New York, to John and Sadie DeAngelo. Raised in a close Italian American family, he developed an early gift for languages and a lifelong love of sports and music. He earned a bachelor’s degree in French education from SUNY Oswego.
While attending SUNY Oswego, Sam met Orysia Guzylak, the love of his life. They married on October 24,1970, and shared more than 55 years of marriage together.
Sam devoted nearly 40 years to education, beginning as a French teacher. After obtaining his master’s degree in administration, he served as an assistant principal, principal, and other administration roles in multiple school districts. He also taught Spanish in various settings.
Sam was warm, outgoing, humorous, and endlessly curious. He had a remarkable memory for dates and details, a wildly impressive affinity for language, and a gift for being able to talk to anyone about anything. He loved the Yankees, Syracuse basketball, music, theater, travel, reading, crossword puzzles, and spirited card games with his family.
One of the greatest joys of his retirement was serving as an usher for the UNC basketball team, where he was proud to be named UNC Basketball Usher of the Year. He also treasured family trips to Yankees games, concerts at the Chautauqua Amphitheater, and travels with Orysia throughout Europe, Hawaii, and Alaska.
Sam was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren. As a father, he was present, encouraging, supportive, and incredibly loving. As a grandparent, when physically able, he rarely missed a band concert or sporting event where he could cheer from the audience as a proud Papa.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, John and Santina “Sadie” DeAngelo of Jamestown, NY. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Orysia Guzylak DeAngelo; two children: Sam DeAngelo (Kristin) of Fuquay Varina, NC and Annie DeAngelo (Jason Studstill) of New York, NY; two grandchildren, Brady and Bennett DeAngelo; two brothers: Chuck DeAngelo (Debbie) and John DeAngelo of Jamestown, NY; beloved cousins, Sam and Christine Prinzi and family; and many extended family members and friends.
Memorial arrangements will be held on October 24, 2026 in his hometown of Jamestown, NY at St James church at 1pm.
