1935-2026
Marilyn Ann Johnson, 91, of Jamestown passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the John and Orpha Blair Hospice House.
A Jamestown resident most of her life, she was born March 11, 1935, in Jamestown to Floyd O. and Helen A. (Jernberg) Johnson.
Marilyn graduated from Jamestown High School in 1952 and North Park University (then College) in 1957 and completed her master’s degree in elementary education from Syracuse University in 1961. She taught for 22 years for the Jamestown Public Schools, most of them as a third-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary. After her first retirement, she was the Director of Children’s Ministries at First Covenant Church for several years and then worked in the office at Sunset Valley Golf Course.
A member of First Covenant Church, she volunteered in various children’s ministries and also sang in the church choir from the age of 15 until her recent illness. Gifted with a beautiful soprano voice, Marilyn was a frequent soloist in both the church and the community. She was also a member of The New York State Retired Teacher’s Association.
Marilyn was an avid reader, enjoyed puzzles, playing golf and traveling. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, cheering on her children and grandchildren in all of their musical and sporting events and hosting holiday get-togethers, keeping meticulous notes in her “holiday book”.
Marilyn is survived by her three children: Amy Cross and her husband, John; Sara Johnson and Bradley Johnson. Also surviving are her three grandchildren: Jennie Caruso and her husband Brandon; Gregory Cross and his wife, Kelsey Powers; and Ellen Cross and her fiance, Thomas Moore. She was recently blessed with a great-granddaughter, Jayne Margaret Cross. She is also survived by her brother, Rev. Allan F. Johnson and his wife, Ardyce, along with many cherished nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wayne L. Johnson, whom she married June 9, 1961, and who died on October 26, 1991. Her brother, Rev. Jerome K. Johnson, also predeceased her.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7:00 pm on Monday, June 15 at First Covenant Church, 520 Spring St., Jamestown. The family will receive friends for one hour before the service and during a reception following the service.
Memorials may be made to First Covenant Church Organ Fund, 520 Spring St., Jamestown, NY 14701 or to Camp Mission Meadows, 5201 East Lake Road, Dewittville, NY 14728.
