Bruce Barmore Thompson

1937-2026

Bruce Barmore Thompson, 88, passed away peacefully in his home on June 17, 2026. A Bemus Point native, he was born September 14, 1937, to the late Frank and Marguerite Barmore Thompson.

A 1954 Bemus Point High School and Clarkson University graduate, Bruce received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and played basketball during his college career. He spent decades as a professional engineer in the Division of Highways with the State of California. For 60 years, Bruce lived and worked in California while spending part of his summers locally.

Loving sports of all sorts, Bruce was an avid fisherman and golfer. He had rounds in his books throughout California, Scotland, and Ireland all while calling Bemus Point Golf Course his lifelong home course, playing in the Wednesday Night Golf League. He was also a proud member of the Art Asquith Senior Golf Tour. Many rich and long-lasting relationships were fostered, in part, through his love of duplicate bridge.

Bruce was a world traveler, visiting China, Russia, and all over Europe. Walking at least thirty minutes per day without fail, Bruce took pride in pursuing a healthy lifestyle. Once moving back home, he was a proud supporter at his great nieces’ and nephews’ sporting events. His calendar was filled with games for Frewsburg Lady Bears soccer, Southwestern sports, and diligently followed the Sherman Lady Wildcat basketball team.

In quieter, reflective moments, Bruce could be found reading books by the dozens.

Bruce’s spirit will be deeply missed by his siblings, Jack (Roberta) Thompson and Cheryl (Brian) Eckwahl; his nephews, Tom (Megan) Eckwahl, Andrew (Mary) Eckwahl, and Gregory (Emily) Eckwahl; as well as his great nieces and nephews, Carter and Audrey Eckwahl, Christian and Julian Eckwahl, and Bowen and Avery Eckwahl.

A private family graveside service will be held at Bemus Point Cemetery.

The family would like to extend their deep appreciation for the team of caregivers who nurtured him through several health challenges through his last couple years.

Donations in Bruce’s memory may be made to First Tee of Western New York, PO Box 273, Bowmansville, NY 14026, 5&2 Ministry, PO Box 152, Clymer, NY 14724, or to a charity of your choice.
