Ellen M. Newman, 105, of Greenhurst, died Friday May 22, 2026, in Star Hospice House, Lakewood, NY.
She was born June 25, 1920, in the Town of Ellery, a daughter of the late Walter and Kate Hale Harvey.
A 1937 graduate of Jamestown High School. Except for a few years during WWII, she spent her entire adult life raising a family and retiring in Greenhurst. She loved living in Greenhurst and up until two months ago was living by herself in her own home.
In 1957, she was appointed Acting Postmistress of the Greenhurst Post Office. At the same time Ellen and her husband George purchased and then operated Greenhurst Grocery and Greenhurst Gifts for over 30 years. Her greatest role was that of wife and mother of seven children.
Her interests include working in her yard, reading, swimming, playing scrabble, crossword puzzles, Monday night bowling league, and spending time with her family in the backyard. She loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Florida, the west coast and Las Vegas. She never missed a Bills game on TV and in her later years loved going to the casinos. She was a long-time member of DAR, American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed working the election poles for many years.
She will be remembered as the “Candy Lady” by three generations of local and summer “shoppers”. She showed patience of Job as she watched children count out their pennies and select their candy. She will always be remembered as a second mom to hordes of Greenhurst kids. She will be remembered for her kindness and respect for other people.
Left to honor her memory are four children George Newman, Jr of Reno, NV, Terry (Judy) Newman, Greg (Sue) Newman, and Roxanne (Mark) Bataitis all of Jamestown, NY as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband George Newman, Sr, whom she married June 15, 1940, and who died January 13, 2003; children Wendy Jo Newman, Richard Newman, and Linda Whitehill; a grandson Matthew Newman and siblings Ruby Moore, Dorothy Scott, Bertha Scott Rindfleish, Virginia Jennings, Oscar Harvey, Sherwood Harvey and Walter Harvey Jr.
The visitation will be held from 1-3 pm Tuesday, May 28th in the Lind Funeral Home.
Internment will be in Fluvanna Cemetery immediately following visitation.
