Donald Paul Hustead, 80, of Mayville, NY and Naples, FL, passed away on Thursday May 21, 2026 at UPMC Hamot Hospital after complications from surgery. He experienced a vibrant, active and healthy life until the challenges of the last few years.

He was born in Buffalo, NY on January 29, 1946, the son of Robert and Ruth Hustead. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of 54 years. They shared a love of house designing, building and renovating, playing golf, traveling, and enjoying a cocktail at dinner time. His favorite quote was, “Living well is the best revenge.”

He is survived by his sister, Joyce Marcum and the late Robin Marcum of Shelby, Alabama and nephews Denis and Terry and brother-in-laws, Paul M. Evans and Michael A. Evans of Orlando, FL.

Don attended Hamline University and established lifelong friendships with his fraternity brothers: Larry Malsam, Dorian Welch, Scott Aden, and Brent Poppenhagen. He was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971. Don worked for Chautauqua County Health Department for thirty years.

Don’s passion for golf started at age ten when he would sneak onto the South Shore Golf Club in Hamburg, NY. Wherever we traveled, a golf course was a part of the mix. From Ireland to Hawaii the adventure involved finding a golf course.

He was a member of the Chautauqua Golf Course for 50 plus years where many friendships were developed. During this time he served as a chairman of the annual Member Guest for 25 years. Winning the Member Guest in 1992 with partner Bill Jones. He was also on the Chautauqua Golf Course Board of Governors from 1989 to 1993. He played on the Wednesday night Willis Golf League, later known as the “Ball Busters” and the Lakers in recent years.

Don’s love for reading fostered his involvement with the boards of the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Library System and the Mayville Library.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Robert Hustead and Virginia H. Evans Job Training Scholarship Fund via Community Foundation, Mayville Library, Chautauqua County Humane Society or the Chautauqua Fire Department.

A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be held at a future date at the convenience of the family, and will be announced.
