Barbara Moynihan Gallagher

She was born in Jamestown, NY in 1929 to the Honorable Francis J. Moynihan and Frances Johnson Moynihan. She was a graduate of Jamestown High School in Chautauqua County, NY where she had many friends.

Barbara met Harry J. McGill at St. Bonaventure University. They married in 1953 then moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma and then Fort Benning, Georgia. Their daughter, Martha McGill was born while they were stationed at Ft. Benning. After Harry J. McGill was discharged, they moved to Lincoln Park, NJ in 1956. Their Francis Mc Gill was born in 1957. In 1964, Harry and Barbara divorced.

In 1967, Barbara married the love of her life, Edward T. Gallagher. They went on many adventures together. They enjoyed camping, sailing, and spending time with their dear friends at the Lincoln Park American Legion Post #279. In the 1980’s, they took a trip to England to meet relatives.

Barbara was a talented seamstress and knitter. She continued knitting until all just before her death having made her great-grandson a beautiful blanket. Barbara loved her dogs and had many throughout her life. When her daughter, Martha, was in high school they raised Scottish Terriers together. Barbara loved Cape Cod and Provincetown having spent summers camping there in her and Eddie’s trailer. Barbara was an excellent cook. She enjoyed canning vegetables from her garden and even made her own kahlua liquer. Another bright spot in Barbara’s life was working as an aide with special needs children and her membership in the Lincoln Park senior citizens club.

Barbara was proud of her Irish and Swedish roots. Her great-grandfather immigrated from Ireland and her grandfather immigrated from Sweden. She remained in contact with her Swedish cousins until death.

Barbara’s survivors included, her daughter, Martha McGill (William), her grandson, Tyler Holt (Joanna), her great-grandson, William L. Holt, her step-children, Michael Gallagher, Susan Gallagher, Cindy Ghallagher Altry (Frank), and Scott Gallagher, her son, Matthew Francis McGill, her niece, Jennifer Jean Moynihan, her step-son, Edward Gallagher, and her brothers, Francis Moynihan Jr., (Carolyn) and Berkley Neville Moynihan.

Barbara was outgoing and enjoyed sharing her life and many adventures with her friends and family. Her passing leaves a hole in all of our hearts. I love you, Mom.
