Shirley M. Skinner

Shirley Mae (Gustafson) Skinner, 93, passed away on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunkirk, NY.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Gustafson and Mildred McCoy Gustafson; her husband, G. William Skinner, her brother, Richard Gustafson; and her companion, Frank Nichols.

She is survived by her three daughters, Kathleen (Michael) Weimer, Patricia Randle, and Deborah (Thomas) Nelson; eight grandchildren, Jason Weimer, Elizabeth (Sean) Baley, Lauren (Tim) Corwin, Carolyn (Joe) Kosinski, Gregory (Sarah) Weimer, Kristine (Charles) Ritzler, Anne Randle, and Emily Nelson (and her fiance Dane Johnson); and has nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear sister-in-law, Elsie Gustafson and five nieces and nephews.

Shirley was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister (and sister-in-law), aunt, nurse, volunteer for her church and community and friend to many over the years. She helped work the grape and dairy farm that she lived on with her husband, Bill and also worked for Chautauqua County for many years as a nurse supervisor at the Chautauqua County Infirmary (now Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center) and for CASA-Community Alternative Systems Agency, Mayville, NY as a nurse caseworker that made home visits and assessed medical and non-medical needs for county residents. She volunteered a lot for her church, Tri-Church Parish in Brocton, NY and volunteered to check blood pressures at the Herbert Star Apartments in Brocton for a number of years. She also served on the Library Board for the Ahira Hall Memorial Library in Brocton. Shirley loved to play cards and was a member of a pinochle club for many years. She also enjoyed Bridge and Canasta. She was a fabulous cook and was considered by her family and many others as one of the best grape pie bakers ever! For many years, she prepared holiday meals for her family but the first folks to receive her home-cooked meals were the farm workers that lived on the farm. She could also be seen tying grapes, driving tractor alongside the grape picker to collect the grapes as they were harvested and she also canned many fruits and vegetables from the family garden to enjoy throughout the year. She truly loved dogs and cats and always perked up with a smile and a hug for pets that would visit the nursing home or came by when family visited. One of Shirley’s greatest gifts was caring for her family. She raised her three daughters and remained active in helping with her grandchildren when they were young. She loved to travel and took several of her grandchildren on elder hostels when they were young too. Shirley loved her many roles in life and will be deeply missed and very much appreciated by those who were fortunate enough to know her. The family would like to thank the staff at Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab for their excellent care of Mom.
