Shirley L. Hanks

1945-2025

Shirley “Lynn” Bender Hanks, 79, of Sherman, NY, and formerly of New York, NY, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025. She was born Dec. 18, 1945, in Wilkensburg, PA, the daughter of the late Harry and Leila Mae Miller Bender.

Lynn had been a designer and ballet dancer in New York City. She had also been the Gallery Manager for Show of Hands art gallery, also in New York City. She enjoyed reading, listening to NPR, gardening, and sitting out in nature watching the animals.

Lynn is survived by her son, James Hanks of New York, NY, three sisters, Carol (David), Barbara (Terry) and Peggy (Thomas), and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thompson “Toby” Hanks Jr, whom she married on Jan. 3, 1973.

At Lynn’s request, there will be no public services held. A celebration of life will be held at a future date and will be announced.
