Richard Wappat
Richard “Dick” Wappat, 63, of Mayville, NY, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025. He was born on March 29, 1962, the son of the late Robert D. and Virginia R. (Eggleston) Wappat. Richard was a 1980 graduate of Mayville Central School.
Richard owned a home improvement and painting business for several years before serving 23 years as a Maintenance Mechanic for the Building and Grounds Department of the Chautauqua County Courthouse. Richard was a hard worker, family-oriented, and devout follower of Jesus Christ. He was extremely proud to serve the Lord and spread the Word to many. Richard’s sense of humor, kindness, and generosity reflected his strong spiritual faith. His hobbies included gardening, homesteading, hunting, caring for his beloved animals, especially Brutus who laid by his side until the end. It was important for Richard to photograph and record all special moments, as well as preparing meals for his family. His children will always carry fond memories of how their dad would bake a unique birthday cake for each of them that couldn’t be surpassed.
Richard persevered through many life challenges with a fighting spirit, grit, and optimism. He met his battle with three cancer diagnoses as a true warrior who remained upbeat and faithful against all odds.
Richard is survived by his children: Jenavin, Braydyn (Mariah Lawson); Corinne (Erik Bryte); and Virginia Wappat; long time companion, Christina Johnson; his sisters, Carolynn Erickson, Susanne Rollman, Kathleen (Nathan) Zwald; sister-in-law, Mindi Wappat; his brother, Steaven (Laurie) Wappat; his cherished niece, Katie (Jonathan) Zimmer and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas, Robert, and Bradley as well as nephew, Robert “Bobby” Wappat.
