Dr. David J. Bylund
Dr. David J. Bylund, 71, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, surrounded by his family at UC San Diego Health’s Jacobs Medical Center.
A man defined by unwavering service and deep devotion, David lived a life dedicated to his family, friends, and country.
David was born on March 16, 1954, in Jamestown, NY, the son of the late John and Doris Bylund. Growing up on Dutch Hollow Road, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. At Maple Grove Jr./Sr. High School, he was the valedictorian of the Class of 1972, excelling in academics while also serving as a key member of the varsity basketball and baseball teams.
He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, in 1976 with a degree in chemistry before earning his medical degree from Vanderbilt School of Medicine in 1980, where he met the love of his life, his future wife, Audrey.
Upon graduation, David served his country in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, with assignments at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego and Camp Foster in Okinawa, Japan, where he earned his brown belt in Karate. His dedication led to his recall into Naval service for Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
Following his honorable active-duty service, David established himself as a highly respected pathologist. He served as Director of the Scripps Reference Laboratory at Scripps Clinic before joining Scripps Green. He retired from the San Diego Pathologists Medical Group and Scripps Mercy Hospital. Throughout his distinguished medical
career, he published multiple book articles on immunopathology and immunological lab tests.
Even after retiring from medicine, David remained the extended family’s “go-to” for medical advice and referrals, a role that perfectly embodied his lifelong trademark of selfless care and concern for all.
David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose love for his family shone through in all that he did. He spent countless hours coaching his children’s little league soccer, basketball, and T-ball teams and later became their biggest fan as they competed in basketball, baseball, soccer, and track throughout high school.
He was renowned for his ability to fix any problem, from repairing sprinkler systems and mending a horse fence post to offering thoughtful life advice. His resourcefulness and action were legendary. His steady presence and unwavering support were the foundation of his family and will be deeply missed.
David found joy in being outdoors, going for full moon horse rides with his wife, playing catch with his kids, or skiing Pumpkin at Mammoth. He enjoyed working on projects around the house. He loved preparing chateaubriand for special family dinners, where his witty sense of humor and infectious laugh will be deeply missed around the dinner
table. In recent years, he embraced his role as a doting grandfather, finding immense happiness in the laughter and love of his grandchildren.
His spirit of kindness, dedication, and noble strength will be remembered by all who knew him.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Audrey, whom he married on July 7, 1979; his three sons, Dr. Quentin Bylund (Lisa), Lukas Bylund (Bryana), and Travis Bylund; and his daughter, Audra Bylund. He is also survived by his two brothers, Daniel Bylund of Carlsbad, CA, and John Bylund of Cazenovia, NY, and by his sister, Polly Spring of Fabius, NY.
