Joey Carlson Running

A list of Joey’s academic and career achievements could fill many pages – that she held a Master of Science in Education and a Master of Arts in Economics Education, taught high school for 32 years, and was the National Business Educator of the Year in 2024 is a glimpse.

Although Joey’s adult life was in Brownsville, Oregon. She always stayed true to her NY roots. Born in Western NY. Graduated from Cassadaga Valley Central Schools and a Saint Bonaventure University Graduate, Joey started her teaching career at Cassadaga Valley High School in Sinclairville, New York as well as Cheerleading Coach. She always kept in touch with classmates and friends that date back to kindergarten. Maid of honor in weddings and a huge presence in her friend’s children’s lives, always keeping tabs on everyone here in Western NY.

Though Joey was a gifted teacher, the biggest part of her heart was devoted to being a MOM.

Joey’s Love Language was baking – and she was fluent in it. She baked bins of cookies to share everywhere and held her title as a birthday cake queen despite all four kids having their birthdays within a three-week window. She never showed up empty-handed to a function, and she always had something special on hand to include the gluten-free or dairy-free folks.

Joey was a vibrant and pivotal member of a wide, extended family, and, as we try to process this loss, the words “welcoming, thoughtful, kind, dedicated, energetic” come up again and again. Her mom Jayne Carlson; sister, Jessica Slack, niece, nephew, sisters-and-brothers-in-law; aunts and uncles and cousins; and many friends, colleagues join Mark and kids in grateful celebration of her time with us.

A celebration of Life will be held at the Cassadaga Valley High School in Sinclairville, New York

(Route 60) on Nov. 8, 2025, at 11 am, with a get together following in the high school cafeteria.
