Dorothy Viola Johnson Krause, 91, of North East, PA and formerly of Mayville, NY, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025, at UPMC Hamot Hospital. She was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Jamestown, NY, the daughter of the late Carl and Gertrude VanVaulkenburg Johnson.
She was a 1953 graduate of Mayville Central School. She had worked for many years as a reading aide at Southern Cayuga School and a substitute teacher and had also been a bank teller at Bank of Castille in Gainesville, NY.
Dorothy was a member of the Chautauqua Fire Department Auxiliary and ran the Farmers Market at the Chautauqua Institution for many years. She enjoyed cooking, swimming, reading, golfing, and making maple syrup with her husband and family.
She is survived by her three sons: Jeffery (Debra) Krause of Moravia, NY, Mike Krause of Sherman, NY, and Marty Krause of Delevan, NY. Six grandchildren: Kelly (John), Jenny (Ben)) and Jessica (Will DeMuth) Krause, Levi (Sheriden) Auge, Luke Auge; one step-grandson, Adam Krause, eight great-grandchildren: Dylan, Haylee, Gavin, Lillian, Charlie, Michael, Ava, Annabelle; and one great-great-grandchild, Mason.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 71 years, Charles L Krause, whom she married October 16, 1954, a daughter, Judy Auge, her son’s fiance, Laura Christine Moogan, one grandchild, Tim Krause (Mike’s son) a brother, Bob Johnson, and two siters, Marilyn Lindahl and Joanne Hoffman.
The funeral will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S. Erie St.). The Rev Rachel Stuart will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery. The family will receive friends for two hours before the funeral (11 AM-1 PM), at the funeral home. A reception will be held afterwards at the Chautauqua Fire Department.
