Mary Ann Smith

Mary Ann Smith, 94, formerly of Bentley Ave. and Strunk Road, Fluvanna, NY, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025 with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. She was the widow of Clyde Smith whom she married Jan. 26, 1974 and who died Nov., 2, 2007.

Mary Ann was born June 19, 1931 in Jamestown, NY to the late Harris and Mildred Johnson Wiltsie. She attended Frewsburg School, was a graduate of Jamestown High School and attended Elim Bible Institute. She retired in 1992 from MRC/SKF after 26 years. She had previously been employed by Sylvania Electric and Art Metal.

Mary Ann’s greatest joy was her family. She loved preparing all of the holiday dinners and making Christmas cookies with her granddaughters. She also loved decorating with family for all of the holidays, especially Christmas. She crocheted an afghan for each granddaughter and even the anticipated great-grandchildren. She valued spending time with her family and would do anything for them. She often said, “I have the best family!”

Mary Ann was a strong woman of faith. She loved helping others and volunteering her time at church. She was a member of Fluvanna Community Church and attended Bemus Point Methodist. While at Fluvanna she volunteered as secretary for many years and was also a Sunday School teacher and youth group leader. She also opened her home to missionaries, and college students who needed a place to stay. She always had an extra plate set at her dinner table for those in need.

Mary Ann volunteered and served as a board member at Fluvanna Free Library, RSVP (Retired Senior & Volunteer Program), and was a member of Ellery Senior Citizens. She also loved to crochet hats to send to Harvest Hands mission in Mexico and dishcloths and dishtowels to give away to all family and anyone who entered her door to visit. She also enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and took great pride in canning her own spaghetti sauce and freezing all that her garden produced.

Mary Ann, affectionately known as Grammie, will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Mary Grace (Jay) Young of Fluvanna; three granddaughters Erin (Todd) Lewellen of Bemus Point, Aimie (Ben) Boatwright of Mayville, and Kaylie (Andrew) Lindstrom of Fluvanna; six great-grandchildren Brooke, Riley, and Luke Lewellen, Logan Boatwright, Nora, and Judah Lindstrom; and a sister, Lois Johnson of Erie, PA.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Phyllis Schultz and Ruth Mitchener.

Per Mary Ann’s wishes, no “sad funeral” will be held. She preferred a “party” to celebrate her going home to be with Jesus where her contagious smile lives on. The joy of the Lord was her strength! Well done, thy good and faithful servant! Celebration of Life arrangements will be announced at a later date.

The family suggests memorials be made to BPMC, PO Box 99, Bemus Point, NY 14712 or Fluvanna Free Library, 3532 Fluvanna Ave. Ext., Jamestown, NY 14701.
