Judy A. Herron Carlson, 86, of Jamestown, formerly of Lakewood, died Wednesday Aug. 27, 2025, in Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing.

She was born June 16, 1939, in Jamestown, NY, a daughter of the late Wilber “Shrimp” and Vivian Carlson North.

Judy was a 1957 graduate of Southwestern Central School and later graduated from Jamestown Community College, and in 1973 earned a master’s degree in education from SUNY Fredonia.

Her interest in Chautauqua County Democratic Party politics led to her employment at Chautauqua County Board of Elections, retiring in 2002 after 22 years of service.

Prior to her employment with the Board of Elections she worked for Hurlbut Developmental Preschool on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution as director and curriculum writer. In the early 70s she served as a teacher at St. peter and Paul Catholic School and frequently substituted at Chautauqua and Mayville Schools.

In 1979-80 Judy was chosen as clerk of field operations for the US Department of Commerce. During this time, she was also the director of the E.J. Reason Farms in Pennsylvania, where she managed the farm for out-of-town owners.

Her outgoing nature and love of family and community initiated her interest in many activities, community services and memberships throughout the years. This dedication and service and community involvement led to an honorary mention in the 1985 issue of “Who’s Who in American Women.”

She was a member of Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, Parent Cooperative Pre-Schools International, Chautauqua County Association for the Education of Young Children, Jamestown Board of Realtors, Chautauqua Lake Power Boat Club and a supporter of Chautauqua Lake Fishing Association.

She volunteered with the Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, Parent-Teacher Association Board, Jayncee officer, Cub Scout Den leader and as a Sunday school teacher at Lakewood United Methodist Church.

Her interests and hobbies were vast including travel, hunting, fishing, skiing, bowling, tennis, golf, camping, hiking, and swimming.

Surviving are three children David Herron of Homosassa, FL, Randall Herron of Lakewood, and Tia Meadows of Clayton, NC; grandchildren John and Matthew Herron, and Jennifer and Jessica Meadows all of North Carolina, and seven great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Bruce “Grizz” Carlson April 10, 2025; a sister Nancy Seeley and an infant son Michael Herron.

The funeral will be held at 2 pm Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025, in the Lind Funeral Home where friends will be received for one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
