Jacqueline Jean Baker

Jacqueline Jean Baker, 95, of Mayville, NY and Wickenburg, AZ, passed away peacefully at her Mayville home on Sept. 5, 2025. She was born on June 5, 1930 in Prescott, AZ to Harry and Geraldine Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband of seventy-one years, James Baker, who passed in 2022. Her son, Jeffrey Baker; her brother, Gordon Brown; and her sister, Janice Baker. She is survived by her son, Jay (Sharon) Baker of Mayville, and her daughter, Joy Baker of Sherman. Her seven grandchildren; Brendan (Gary) Baker of Maryland, Justin (Sara) Baxenberg of Virginia, Quintana (Luke) Hayden of Connecticut, Bethany Baker of the District of Columbia, Jessup (Christina) Baker of Mayville, Camden (Claire) Baker of Mayville, and Chandler (Courtney) Baker of Mayville. Nine great grandchildren; Oliver and Isabel Baxenberg of Virginia, Luke and Ellis Hayden of Connecticut, Noelle and Jack Baker of Mayville, Silas Baker of Mayville, and Wren and Lennox Baker of Mayville. Several nieces and nephews, including Melissa (Mark) Cramer of Pennsylvania, and Shawn Baker of Dakar, Senegal, who helped care for her in her final days. She also had many dear friends who will miss her greatly. Jacquie was a registered nurse who entered the nursing program at Jamestown Community College in 1969, which at that time was partnered with WCA Hospital. She then went on to receive her elementary education degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia, and taught kindergarten at Chautauqua’s Turner Elementary for many years. She was beloved by her students, some of whom continued to stop by her classroom to say “Hi” even when they had moved on to high school. She was known for her delicious homemade fruit pies, and one Thanksgiving made a whole pie for each of her seven grandchildren. Jacquie was an ideal Grandma, and was adored by all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her biggest delight was having them visit, which they did often. She loved to travel, and over the years visited both China and Africa. Elephants were her favorite, and it was a dream come true to see them in the wild. She brought back little souvenirs from these trips for her students. She was unfailingly kind and compassionate and always concerned for the well-being of others. Jacquie will be greatly missed by her large family, and we know she will continue to watch over us all. We love you “a bushel and a peck”. The family wishes to thank Best Care Coordinators of Jamestown and Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care for their devoted care of Jacquie in her final days. She was a hospice volunteer herself for several years, and donations may be made to Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care. Per her wishes, there will be no calling hours and funeral services will be private. A celebration of life for both Jacquie and Jim will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28 at Ashville Fire Station #1, 5338 Stow Road, Ashville, NY at noon; followed by luncheon. All who knew them are welcome to attend.
