Doris Landy
Doris Landy, 88, a lifelong resident of Lakewood and Ashville, passed away on Sept. 5, 2025.
She was born on Oct. 7, 1936, to the late Carroll and Anna Johnson Larson. She graduated from Southwestern Central School in 1954. Doris (Dorrie) was a cheerleader in high school, a member of the choir, and the last May Queen of Lakewood. Dorrie was the first Miss Jamestown, crowned by Mary Ann Mobley, Miss America at the time.
Doris continued her education at Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing and the University at Buffalo graduating in 1952 as a registered nurse. She was employed by Buffalo General Hospital, WCA, and for Dr. Messenger, Dr. Szabo, and Dr. Kaminski as an office nurse. She also worked for the Chautauqua County Health Department.
A member of the Vikings, Norden Club, and Jamestown Garden Club, Dorrie also held memberships at the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club and Glorida Dei Lutheran Church, where she was a charter member and sang in the choir for 40 years. Dorris spent many years serving as a Parish Nurse, additionally working at many flu clinics over the years. She was a proud member of the Chautauqua Literacy and Scientific Circle (CLSC), the adult education book club at Chautauqua that has been reading together since 1878.
Doris was married to Decio Landy for 35 years. She was the mother of Barry Minsker (Jennifer) of Minnesota, Joel Minsker of Maine, and Julie Turcotte (Louis) of Ashville, NY. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Max Minsker, Olivia Simpson (Noah), Anna Stinson (Zachary), Paige Turcotte (Christian Johnson), and Brooks Turcotte. She became a great grandma when Beau Thomas Simpson was born in January 2025.
Dorrie was proud of her Scandinavian heritage. She loved the NY Mets and traveling, including many trips to Europe with her lifelong friend, Gail.
Doris enjoyed quilting, reading, bridge, and golf in her younger years. She also was in many Little Theatre musicals. She loved spending time with her family and friends.
The lasting memory of Doris will be her devout adoration for family and friends and her delight in having a marvelous time.
The celebration of life for Doris will be at 12:00 pm on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025, at Bethel Lutheran Church, the very church where she was confirmed in 1950. Pastor Timothy Hoyer will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 11am-12pm, Saturday, Oct. 4, at the church. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
