John Holly Scroxton

John Holly Scroxton, 90, of Bemus Point, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Westfield Hospital following recent health complications. He was born on Mar. 24, 1935, in Hornell, NY to the late Holly Dean and Minnie Hackett Scroxton.

Graduating from Hornell High School in 1953, John continued to earn his B.A. in chemistry and his M.S. in Science Education from Alfred University. Throughout his higher education, he remained dedicated to his high school sweetheart, Barbara Sheon Scroxton, who he married July 14, 1956.

John thoroughly enjoyed teaching, spending three years at Scio Central, two years at Lyndonville Central, and the bulk of his career as a chemistry professor in the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Chemistry Department for 30 years.

Barbershop harmony was deeply satisfying to John. He sang in quartets in both Pennsylvania and in Florida. Beginning in 2000, while he and Barb spent 18 years in Flagler Beach, FL, John also ‘crossed the pond’ six times, enjoying the sights and sounds of England, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.

In earlier years, John loved boating, even making the trip to Bass Pro Shop headquarters in Missouri in the ’70s to haul their first pontoon boat home. Jigsaw puzzles forever kept his interest, enjoying the hours spent piecing them together.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State knew John as a loyal fan throughout his years.

His family-oriented spirit will be treasured by his son, Bruce Scroxton of Bemus Point; his daughter,Linda (Brian) Haney of Indiana, PA; his grandchildren, Jon Scroxton, Eddie Scroxton, Kurtis (Jaime)Scroxton, Andrew Haney, and Lindsey Haney; his great grandchildren, Hailey Trabert and SeremaHaney; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Barbara A. Scroxton; hisson, Edward Scroxton; and his granddaughter, Melissa Trabert.

In keeping with John’s wishes, no viewing or visitation will be observed. Memorials may be made to Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 306, Bemus Point, NY 14712.
