Mary Margaret Bernadette Tobin Seastedt Vet

The “Irish Babe,” Mary Margaret Bernadette Tobin Seastedt Vet, 90, of Jamestown, passed away surrounded by her beloved family on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at STAR Hospice House. She was born on December 16, 1934, in Hornell, NY, to the late John Francis and Ethel Mae Sherwood Tobin.

An instant friend to any new group in which she found herself, Mary graduated from Hornell High School in 1952 and furthered her education from the St. James School of Nursing. All who knew Mary knew she was the “go to” for medical and personal questions; further, she was a genuine second mom to all her children’s friends throughout the decades.

Mary’s working years began as an x-ray technician, then continuing as a cherished nurse at Dr. Sinatra’s office, and retiring from Heritage Green as a receptionist at the youthful age of 82. Her sincere manner encouraged everyone to stop in their tracks to say hello.

Much the same, Mary’s earnest love for family permeated her joy for big gatherings. She remained the life of every party, dancing at family weddings and offering a resounding “cheers” with Irish spirits at her 90th birthday party. Her love for singing always encouraged strident tunes, albeit struggling with intonation at times.

Truly the “Irish Babe,” Mary upheld resounding pride of her Irish heritage. She traversed the city in her white PT Cruiser with decals of green shamrocks and her nickname loudly displayed. St. Patrick’s Day parties were Mary’s charm each year, vehemently ensuring family roll call had everyone present. So, too, she never skipped out on a rowdy Christmas Eve, sipping to judge each and every batch of glogg.

Mary was one tough lady, and she will forevermore be admired for her resilience.

Her vibrant earthside years will be remembered by her children, R. Erik (Karen) Seastedt, Tanya (the late Mark) Grosschmidt, Michael (Brenda) Seastedt, Kristen Seastedt, and Sue (the late George) Seastedt; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her first husband, J. Ronald Seastedt; her second husband, William Vet; and her four siblings.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am, Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 4-7pm Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Lind Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care for their dedicated and thoughtful care for Mary, 20 W Fairmount Avenue, Lakewood, NY 14750, or to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, as animals were a big part of Mary’s life, 2825 Strunk Road, Jamestown, NY 14701.
