David P. Swanson

David P. Swanson
David P. Swanson, 83, of Ellington, NY, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 12, 2025 with his wife by his side. For the past 10 years he had endured the effects of dementia.
He was born April 26, 1942 to Everett “Augie” and Ruth (Jose) Swanson and was their middle son. David contracted spinal meningitis at the age of 5 and completely lost all hearing. He started his education at Rochester School of the Deaf, and after graduation he attended Gallaudet University in Washington, DC.
During his high school and college years he was active in sports and especially loved soccer and baseball. He showed his agility right up until dementia set in but continued watching sports on T.V.
However, his love for his God, Jehovah was most important to him and eagerly shared the Good News of God’s Kingdom with others.
In 1996 after working 33 years, he took an early retirement from Acu-Rite so that he and his wife, Debra could move to Rochester to support the deaf ministry. He was instrumental in helping establish a Sign Language Congregation there and later did the same in Buffalo and Erie, PA. He enjoyed serving all three congregations and being of help to whomever needed it.
On Aug. 27, 1983 he married his wife, Debra (nee) Boughton. From his first marriage to Marie Hunter, he had five children Steve (Michelle) Swanson, Wendy (Joe) Wood, Jeff (Kim) Swanson, Tim (Christine) Swanson, and former daughter in-law Alison Swanson, and David Swanson (Stephanie Lopez). With his marriage to Debra he gained a step daughter, Tanya (Todd) Ashbaugh.
His grandchildren are Chelsea (Luke) Culver, Courtney Swanson, Christine (Rocco) Imperato, Ryan Wood (Kara Kelly), Chianne Haglund, Shane (Hannah) Swanson, Kiara Parisi, Kylie (Jordan) Rice, Autumn Dahlgren, Dakota Swanson, Huntyr Swanson, Leo Swanson, Genevieve and Quinn Swanson, Aleena Swanson, and Kayden Gunnell, Joshua Ashbaugh and Matthew Ashbaugh.
His great-grandchildren are Ayden, Brylie, Logan, Scout, Hazel, Anthem, Theodore, Sebastian, Daeryn, Ray Lynn, and June.
Also surviving are his brothers Tom and Terry (Donna) Swanson. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Justin Wood and sister in law Sandra Swanson.
David often talked about what he looked forward to when kingdom blessings come to earth. He wanted to see loved ones brought back in the resurrection and to also regain his hearing and to hear his wife’s and children’s voices for the first time. In his final days Dave always had a smile on his face when talking about his wife, family and friends.
A memorial service will be held July 19 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Conewango Congregation. Ray Long will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be donated to Conewango Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses PO Box 77 Conewango NY 14726.
