Mary Jo Eddy, 78, of Ashville, NY passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 10, 2025, following a recent illness. She was born in Union City, PA, on Sept. 21, 1946, to the late John and Janet Stone Mineo.
Following high school, Mary Jo attained her bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and her master’s degree from Edinboro University. She found her calling as an English teacher at Panama Central School, a position that was much more than just a career to her. During her decades of teaching, she made a difference in the lives of generations of students in the PCS classrooms as a middle school and high school teacher while also serving as an advisor for Student Council, Yearbook, Drama Club and more. She also provided help and guidance to countless students in need as a tutor for the district. Following retirement, she often was a substitute teacher of various age groups including Elementary students she so enjoyed working with. She adored her work and remained excited to dive into each day for her entire career.
Whether in her classroom or anywhere else, she lit up the room with her kind smile and caring personality. She will be remembered for her eternal optimism as well as always going out of her way to find the perfect gifts for those she knew and making everyone she came across feel special.
An avid reader, Mary Jo spent many years with the Ashville Free Library as a board member and volunteer. During retirement, she cherished opportunities to travel with her son, Scott, including numerous summer trips to their favorite spots in coastal Maine.
Mary Jo’s caring and fun spirit will be missed by her son, Scott Keith Eddy; her brother, John (Rita) Mineo of Canadohta Lake, PA; her aunt, Nancy Briggs of Denver, CO; Nancy’s children, Michele Mineo, Tricia Mineo and David Mineo of Colorado; and close friends including Betsy Landy and Becky Hamm.
Besides her parents, Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Alan Keith Eddy, who passed away May 9, 2017.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Friday, May 23, 2025, at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, Union City, PA. Rev. Thomas J. Whitman will be Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Teresa Cemetery, Union City, PA.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 4-6pm on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Lind Funeral Home, Jamestown, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mary Jo Eddy Scholarship Fund at Panama Central School, 41 North St., Panama, NY 14767.
