Charles “Charlie” Louis Krause
MAYVILLE- Charles “Charlie” Louis Krause, 91, of North East, PA, and formerly of Mayville, NY and Letchworth, NY, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025 at the Lecom Medical Center in Erie, PA. He was born March 13, 1934, in Mayville, NY, the son of the late Louis and Velma Stacy Krause.
Charlie was a 1952 graduate of Mayville Central School. He then attended Cornell University, earning a bachelor’s degree in agriculture education. He then worked as a Teacher of Agriculture in Genoa, Southern Cayuga from 1959-1974, and Letchworth Central School from 1974, where he retired from in 1989.
He was a member of the Chautauqua Fire Department, where he served as Chautauqua County Fire District 1 Commissioner from 1999 to 2023 and was chairman through the construction of the new fire station, and also ran the Farmer’s Market at the Chautauqua Institution. In earlier years he was an FFA advisor.
Charlie enjoyed hunting, fishing and making maple syrup. He was known for Gladiolus and Asiatic Lilies and brightening up the Chautauqua market with these beautiful flowers, and most importantly, for making homemade maple syrup.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Johnson Krause, whom he married October 16, 1954, three sons, Jeffery (Debra) Krause of Moravia, NY, Mike Krause of Sherman, NY, and Marty Krause of Delevan, NY. Six grandchildren, Kelly (John), Jenny (Ben)) and Jessica (Will) Krause DeMuth, Levi Auge (Sheriden) Luke Auge, one step-grandson, Adam Krause, eight great grandchildren, Dylan, Haylee, Gavin, Lillian, Charlie, Michael, Ava, Annabelle and one great-great-grandchild, Mason.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Auge. A sister, Carol Jackson (Jim), his son’s fiance, Laura Christine Moogan, and one grandchild, Tim Krause (Mike’s son).
The funeral will be held at 3 PM on Friday, March 21, 2025, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S. Erie St). The Rev Rachel Stuart will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends for two hours before the funeral (1-3 PM), at the funeral home. A reception will be held afterwards at the Chautauqua Fire Department.
