Billie Jeanne (Cookie) Smith Taylor

Billie Jeanne (Cookie) Smith Taylor, 80, formerly of Lakewood, NY and Sherman, NY, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024 at Heritage Park Rehab & Skilled Nursing.

An area resident most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Eugene and Louise Brawdy Smith, born June 2, 1944 at the Fort Benning US Army Base in Thomasville, GA. Throughout her life, Billie always referred to herself as a “Georgia Peach Army Brat”.

Prior to retirement, she was a team member at Cummins Engine in Lakewood for over 20 years. A member of Calvary Baptist Church, she also belonged to the DAR and Fenton Historical Society. Billie enjoyed antiquing, genealogy and planting flowers around her home, especially forget-me-nots.

Surviving are four children: Michelle Axelson of Jamestown, Rhonda Swan (Norman) of Gerry, Steve Bennett (Becky) of Lakewood, and Mary Jane Anderson (Rodney) of Jamestown; and twelve grandchildren: Justin Axelson, Christopher Axelson, Rachel Axelson Irwin (Anthony), Amanda Swan Rice, Jessica Swan Heitzenrater (Daniel), Matthew Swan, Zackaree Bennett (Livy), Ashlee Bennett, Seth Lee Bennett (Dakota), Jenna Anderson (Brandon), Julia Anderson Heitzenrater (Brandon), and Jarod Anderson (Olivia).

Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Joseph and James Irwin, and Olive Heitzenrater, with another great-granddaughter Heitzenrater expected in late October; and three siblings, Sandra “Joanie” Fiscus, Susan Fardink, and Ronald Smith (Theresa). She also had many, many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.

Along with her parents, Billie was preceded in death by a sister, Sonito “Alice” Gesaman, and a great-grandson, Elliott Johnsen Heitzenrater.

The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home, led by Pastor Jeff York. Burial will be at the Westview Cemetery in Starbrick, PA. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday prior to the funeral service.
