Gale E. Winne Sr.
Gale E. Winne Sr 84, of Columbus, PA passed away at UPMC Hamot Medical Center on September 13, 2024. Gale was born on June 25, 1940 in Corry, PA, and was the son of late Michael E. Winne and Florence Woodring-Sammis.
Gale graduated from Corry High School in June of 1958. In February of 1959 he was drafted and served in the US Army, and later served in the US Army Reserves until February 1965. On February 22, 1961 Gale had married his high school sweetheart, Martha Davis in Beaverdam, PA and later moved back to his hometown of Columbus, PA where he had worked at the Corry Jamestown plant in Corry, PA from 1959 to 1962.
In July of 1961 Gale started a family and in 1963 relocated from Columbus, PA to Maple Springs, NY where he had worked as a brake & press operator at the former Blackstone plant from 1964 to 1981. He had also worked at the former AMSCO plant from 1981 to 1984, and then worked at the former Watsons Industries in Jamestown, NY from 1984 to 1990.
Gale was an active member of the Maple Springs Volunteer Fire Department from February 1970 through March 1986, serving as a line officer for 11 years and president, and then assistant chief for 5 years.
In 2007, Gale and Martha moved back to Columbus, PA where he had worked as a semi-truck driver for Victory Express of Medway, Ohio, and Garvin Trucking co. of Columbus, PA. Later he worked as a press operator at the Tonnard MFG. in Columbus, PA until his retirement in 2014.
During his retirement, Gale enjoyed working on his 1942 Farmall tractor and “puttering” in his garage and around the house. Gale enjoyed spending time with his wife and family and going to the area of Pennsylvania county fairs with his tractor, where had entered several tractor pulls. He always tried for first place, but always settled for 2nd or 3rd place. He always said, “I’ll get ’em next year”. He also enjoyed his campers and spent a lot of time with his wife camping in Nashville, Tennessee and other states in the northwest, and along the east coast.
Gale was preceded in death by his wife, Martha E. Winne, brother USMC David Ray Winne of Beacon Falls, Connecticut, and son Dale A. Winne.
Gale is survived by four sons, Michael Winne and his wife Sheri of Bemus Point, NY, Gale Winne Jr, of Smithville, TN, Terry Winne and his wife Maureen of Jamestown, NY, Jeffrey Winne and his wife Mary of Somerset, PA; two daughters Teresa Sanders and her companion Rob Warner of Erie, PA and Lisa Norberg and her husband Steve of Jamestown, NY.
Gale is also survived by his stepsisters, Barbara “Jill” Pasqualini and husband James from North Stonington, Connecticut, Peggy Calmamo and husband jack of Penhook, VA, and stepbrother, Peter Sammis of Wallingford, Connecticut. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
At the request of the family, no service or visitation will be observed. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
