Allen Propheter

Allen Bruce Propheter, 80, of Lebanon, Pa., and formerly of Jamestown, died August 31, 2024 after a courageous fight with brain cancer. Al was known throughout the Jamestowncommunity as a proud and longtime member of the Jamestown Fire Department. He was born May 29, 1944 in Jamestown to Woodrow Wilson and Marian E. WaresPropheter. He was raised in Jamestown and the Maple Springs area before enlisting in the U.S.Air Force, where he served from 1962 to 1966, learning the mechanic trade. Upon returning toJamestown, he worked at Sears, Roebuck and Co., both downtown and at the Chautauqua Malllocation. Al subsequently was employed by Crawford Furniture before joining the JamestownFire Department and also working as a paramedic. In 1968, he met the love of his life, Sherill Turnell, and they were married at NiagaraFalls the following year. He became the head of a family that included three school-age boys,treating them with unconditional love and support as they became his own. He and Sherry addeda daughter, Jody in 1970, to round out their family, enjoying excursions to Toronto, Albany andCape Cod on a regular basis.In retirement, Al was known around Chautauqua Lake for his work on break walls andhomeowner docks, and a caretaker of cottages, always with his faithful dog Tess at his side. Hisgreatest joys in life were all his grandchildren, he especially enjoyed playing with his great-grandson Joshua Samuel Myers in Lebanon, where he relocated following Sherry’s death in2017. Al was a generous, humble man with a servant heart who dedicated his life to caring forthe needs of others. His passions in life were serving and caring for his children, grandchildrenand wife. He loved bowling, gardening and playing with his dogs Tess and Abby.He is survived by his daughter Jody (Tony) Myers of Lebanon; sons: Dr. Steven (Cynthia)Johnson of Richmond, Va., and Dr. Brett (Heather) Johnson of Dallas, Texas; brothers Darryl (Earlene) Propheter of Mayville and Norman (Elaine) Propheter of Syracuse, N.Y., and sister Beverly Nordstrom of Virginia Beach, Va.Al will also be sorely missed by grandchildren Marcella Myers, Caleb (Manuela) Myers, JuliaMyers and Jessica Myers of Lebanon, and Louis (Jennifer) Johnson of Richmond, Va.,Christopher (Meghan) Johnson of Richmond, and Anne (Megan) Youngblood of Nashville, aswell as great-grandchildren Joshua, Roux Youngblood of Nashville, and Caiden Johnson of Richmond and brother-in-law Dan (Barbara) Turnell of Albany. He was preceded in death by his wife Sherry; a son, Timothy Johnson; and a brother, Warren Propheter. A mass will be held on Friday at SS. Peter and Paul RC Church, 508 Cherry Street, Jamestown,NY at 1:00 PM and a celebration of Al’s life of service to his family and his community. Thefamily will receive friends from 11:30 AM- 12:30 PM at Powers, Present & Sixbey FuneralHome, Inc., 316 E. 5th Street, Jamestown, NY.
