MAYVILLE- Vera Rosemary Sothcott Cleland, 91, of Mayville, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the Westfield Memorial Hospital. She was born August 4, 1933, in Hampshire, England, the daughter of the late Herbert C. and Lillian Wilson Sothcott.
She was an excellent seamstress who worked many years for a dress shop in Chautauqua Institution and for friends and family in the Mayville community. Along with her husband, she was owner and operator of the Lone Pine Motel during the 80s and 90s. Her hobbies included sewing, her lovely gardens, traveling, a good debate, visiting with friends, and most important, her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Earl Cleland, whom she married December 10, 1955, in Sinclairville, NY, four children, David (Carol) Cleland of Ocean Shores, WA, Beverly (Ronald) Andzelik of Mayville, NY, Douglas (Susan) Cleland of Westfield, NY and Jennifer Cleland of Oneonta, NY, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one sister, Dorothy Klinginsmith of Cleveland, OH, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Valerie, and one sister, Muriel Wade.
A funeral will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 South Erie St) with FR Todd Remick officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2 PM before the funeral, at the funeral home.
