Betsy Montgomery (nee Sank)

Betsy Montgomery (nee Sank), 79, passed away on August 16, 2024, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Born on June 20, 1945, in Erie, Pennsylvania, Betsy was known for her vibrant, hardworking, and loving nature. She was a dedicated mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt who cherished her family deeply.

Betsy’s passion for the outdoors was evident in her love for hunting, fishing, and camping. She was an avid collector of Betty Boop memorabilia and elephants. Her skillful hands were often busy with crocheting, creating beautiful pieces for her loved ones and for charity.

She leaves behind a loving family, including her son, William L. Rooney Jr. daughters; Debbe Littlefield and her husband Gene, Patricia Smith and her husband Britt; brothers, Lee Sank and his wife Donna, Leon Sank and wife Sheila, and Archery Higley; sisters, Ida Carlson, Isabell Higley, and Linda Wynn, sister-in-law Joan Sank. Betsy was a proud grandmother to Jeremy Eddie, Heather Ball, Rylee Littlefield, Amanda Groce, Joshua Eckman, and Kirk Douglas Smith Jr., and a great- grandmother to Tyler Tumminelli, Fabian Xavier Delarosa-Smith, Parker Michael Groce, Kyilie Marie Tollison, and Sawyer Michael Groce. Her caretaker of 8yrs Bob Spencer.

Betsy was preceded in death by her brothers Joseph, Ronald, Phillip, and John Sank, and Thomas Watson; sisters Beverly Sank, Carol Goodwill, Peggy Higley, and Charlotte Stufflebeam; her parents, Joseph Sank and Ida Prine; and her grandchildren Robert Roy Kinne II and Jessica Lynn Bromley.

Betsy’s kind and caring soul extended beyond her family to stray animals, which she nurtured with love and compassion.

Per her wishes, there will be no memorial service. RJ Slater IV Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Homestead, Pennsylvania, is assisting the family with her arrangements. Betsy’s spirit and legacy will continue to live on through the many lives she touched.
