Charles L. “Charlie” Smith

Charles L. “Charlie” Smith, 66, of Lakewood, NY, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. A lifelong area resident, he was born on October 1, 1957, the son of the late Louis W. and Sabra M. Smith.

Charlie was a 1975 graduate of Southwestern High School. In the fall of 1975 while attending Jamestown Community College and working as a talented chef and committee boat member at the Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club, he volunteered for the Lakewood Fire Department. This was to be the start of his professional career in firefighting. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Fire Science Management. While attending the University of Maryland, he worked in the large urban areas of Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties gaining valuable field experience somewhat different from Lakewood.

After obtaining his degree in Fire Science Management, he returned to Lakewood to where he pursued an MBA from Saint Bonaventure College. In 1982, Charlie was appointed Health, Safety and Energy Coordinator for the local BOCES where he worked with school districts in Chautauqua, Erie and Cattaraugus Counties.

In 1988, Charlie left BOCES to form a consulting corporation with his long-time friend, Chris Stohl, which they operated until 1996. The business focused on environmental inspections including asbestos and lead-based paint. In 1997, Charlie purchased Wildwood Acres Campground in Bemus, NY. Charlie and Chris again worked together as owners of the campground for the next 20 years. Charlie loved his role a Mayor of the Camp and he loved the campers, many of whom became his friends.

Charlie is survived by his brother: Scott A. Smith and his wife, MaryJane Moreau of Venice, FL; his sister: Sabra K. “Sally” (J. Enrique) Nazar of Endwell, NY; his nephew: Rick (Mei) Nazar and their children: Joshua and Sophia all of San Diego, CA; his niece: Lisa (Nick) Butler and their children; Dylan and Briana all of Naples, FL; his cousins: Nick Nichols and his wife, Mary Brouillard of Appling, GA; Julie Smith of Lakewood, NY; Jackson (Cara) Smith of Lakewood, NY.

Charlie was a loving son, brother and uncle, a thoughtful and compassionate friend and colleague. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A graveside service will be held at Lake View Cemetery on Saturday, September 14th at 10:00 AM. Following the graveside ceremony, family and friends are invited to go to the Lakewood Fire Department Clubhouse located at the Fire Department training ground at 116 Pleasantview Avenue, Lakewood, NY for a light lunch and beverages. The firemen’s service celebrating Charlie’s life will be held at 2 PM at that same location.
