Matthew B. Roschy

Matthew B. Roschy

We are very sad to share that Matthew Benton Roschy passed away in his sleep on February 6, 2024. Although he lived many lives in his 56 years, it was far too soon for him to leave us.

Matt was a dreamer, a free thinker, an artist, a great cook, a traveler, a story teller, a craftsman, and a friend to everyone he met. He loved the road, his family, his pets, thrift stores, garage sales, his friends, his rum, his plans of what he wanted to do next, and to laugh.

He was a collector. He collected photos of discarded mattresses, he collected plastic dinosaurs, and movie sized candy wrappers – this list could go on and on and on. But what he really was collecting all along were friends, stories, memories, and relationships that he could turn around and give back to all of us who loved him. If you knew Matt he loved you and you most likely loved him. Matt would give to people to a fault. As much as that would sometimes bother his family, it rarely bothered him. Where Matt drew the energy to give so much to so many is something we will all have to reflect on in our remaining years.

Matt leaves behind his Mom and Dad, Kathy and Bill Roschy who he called and spoke with nightly if he was not with them physically. Matt also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Elana Roschy who only wanted more time with him whenever they could get it. Matt also leaves behind his two nephews, Zev and Akiva, who truly loved their uncle and his unbridled love of them. Matt saw his nephews as his muses and never held back from being who he was with them – they knew their uncle in all of his glory. They both have Matt’s sense of humor, their interest in drawing and artwork, their love of food, and exploring the quirky parts ofthe world. They loved his undivided attention, his inclusion in exploring, watching crazy movies together, thrifting, and trying new things. Matt never doubted their abilities in anything – and they felt that.

As a family we felt his love and loved him as the unique individual he was. Matt has made a lasting impression on our community, and well beyond, through his personality, artwork, craftsmanship and friendships. There will be a celebration of Matt’s life in July with details to come closer to then. A scholarship will also be set up through the community foundation that will be reflective of Matt’s spirit.
