Lois B. Hammond

Lois B Hammond passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, November 30, 2023 in Charlotte, NC. For the past ten years, Lois has been challenged and battled the debilitating illness of Alzheimers. She was cared for by her family at home during this time, along with excellent care and support from Hospice Care.

The family would like to recognize and give special thanks to all the nurses and aides for their dedicated, professional and compassionate care provided by Hospice & Palliative Care of Charlotte Region during their weekly visits over the past two years.

Lois was born on October 16, 1938 in Jamestown, NY; the daughter of Nels and Inez Berggren.

Lois was a 1956 graduate of Falconer Central High School. She attended Jamestown Community College and Fredonia State University ultimately earning her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. Following her love for teaching young children, she worked in the Jamestown Early Childhood/Head Start program for several years. Moved to Charlotte, NC in 1985 and worked for 20 years in the Charlotte Mecklenberg Schools becoming Director of Early Childhood Education at Bruns Elementary School prior to her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nels and Inez Berggren.

Lois is survived by her husband of 66 years, Clair F. Hammond. She is the mother of three beautiful children Holly C. Hammond of Rochester, NY; Gregg F. Hammond of Charlotte, NC; and Kristina L. Davis of Alexandria, KY. She leaves behind six adored grandchildren and one beloved great-grandchild.

Lois always enjoyed reading a good book, was a great cook and loved to travel with her husband, notably to Spain, Moracco, Hawaii. Family time was a high priority, she enjoyed camping trips with her young children as well as frequent summer picnic trips to Vikings on Lake Chautauqua with close friends and family.

The family will have a celebration of life in Jamestown in the spring-early summer of 2024. Family and friends will be notified of specific dates. Committal service will take place at Lakeview Cemetery.
