Susan Shirey West

Susan Shirey West, 95, of Erie, PA, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Saint Mary’s at Asbury Ridge in Erie, PA. She was born in Franklin, PA, on Dec. 19, 1927, a daughter of the late Leland and Susan Raifschneider Shirey Sr. She married Robert R. West, who preceded her in death in 2001.

She graduated from St. Petersburg High School, Clarion County, PA, in 1945, spend a summer at the Chautauqua Institute, Chautauqua, NY, studying Opera, and attended Jamestown Community College. At a young age, she worked as a waitress at various restaurants in Bemus Point, NY, including her father-in-law’s restaurant, West’s Restaurant. At various stages of her life, she also worked as a time study technician for Jamestown Malleable Iron (the first woman in that job), as a manager at Cadet Dry Cleaners in Lakewood, NY, and a secretary for Gloria DEI Lutheran Church in Lakewood, NY.

Susan was a past member of St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in Bemus Point, NY, where she enjoyed being a member of the choir. She was an avid reader, active in environmental groups including PEACE (Protecting the Environment and Children Everywhere), enjoyed playing golf, and was an enthusiast for classical music.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Leland Jr., Robert, David, Paul and Alan, her sister, Corrine DeGeroge, and son-on-law Terry Fenno.

She is survived by her sons, William West (Shirl) of Erie, Robert West II of Silver Spring, MD,; her daughters, Deborah West of Erie and Amy Fenno of Jamestown, NY; her granddaughter, Alicia Kimber (Roger) of Jamestown, NY; her great-grandson, Zachary Kimber of Jamestown, NY; her sister, Rose Mahoney of Pasadena, CA; many nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt and Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, Pa 16504 on Saturday, July 29 from 1 pm-3 pm until the time of the Memorial Service there at 3 pm. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
