Royal H. Nickerson, 93, of Clymer, N.Y., died Sunday July 16, 2023 with his loving family at his side. Royal was born Aug. 5, 1929 in Dewittville, N.Y., son of Elwyn and Eva Shannon Nickerson. Royal was a graduate of Chautauqua High School. On Dec. 8, 1950 Royal married Joyce Hewes. The couple had been married 33 years at the time of her passing in March of 1984. In 1951, with his wife Joyce, Royal established the Nickerson Farm in Clymer. A hard working farmer, he was active in various farming organizations, including Chautauqua County Farm Bureau and the Holstein Club. Royal participated in cattle and oxen shows in the region. In May of 1999 he was a recipient of a National FFA Honorary State Degree. He was a “Collector of all things” and was proud to share his knowledge of his collectables with his family and friends. Above all he was proud of his family and farm and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his children: Robert (Vicki) of Corry, PA., William (Sheri), of Sherman, N.Y., Todd (Donna), of Clymer, N.Y., Jill (Randy) Wiltsie, of Frewsburg, N.Y.,
Bert (Brenda), of Luray. VA., and Bart (Julie), of Corry, PA.; 21 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren; also survived by his daughter-in-law, Esther Nickerson, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.
Besides his parents, Royal is predeceased by his wife, Joyce Hewes Nickerson; his son, Bryan Nickerson Sr.; great-granddaughter, Hannah Jo Nickerson; siblings, Earle, Elton, Luciele Giltinan, Elmer, Ernest, Edward, Percy, Lois Parker, Lee, and Carol Wheeler; longtime companion of over 20 years, Martha Nickerson, and his longtime loyal farmhand, Donald Thompson. Visitation will be held on Monday July 24 at the Nickerson Family Farm from 11 am-2 pm, where a funeral service will follow at 2 pm.
Interment will be in the Holland Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the farm after the burial.
