Philip J. Shay, 73, of Fluvanna Townline Road, Jamestown, passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 in UPMC Chautauqua.
He was born Nov. 29, 1949 in Jamestown, a son of the late Herbert L. and Carol Phillips Shay.
Philip was a 1968 graduate of Bemus Point High School and earned his associates degree from Jamestown Community College.
Before retiring, he was the pastor of South Stockton Wayside Chapel for over 20 years. In earlier years, he had worked at several local former factories.
He attended New Beginnings Baptist Church and Ellery Baptist Church. He was a member of a local metal detecting club, the Rodeo City Senior Citizens, Sinclairville Senior Citizens, and the Valley Historical Society.
Philip loved being around people and telling jokes, he had a great sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry L. Wing Shay, who he married Feb. 27, 1971 in Stockton, a brother Paul H. Shay, a sister-in-law Maleia (Paul) Fetters, a brother-in-law Fred Wing, his mother-in-law Dottie Muzzy, his father-in-law Fred Wing Sr., and several cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister-in-law Rosalee Shay.
A private graveside service will be held in Fluvanna Cemetery at the convenience of the family. A celebration of life will be held at a later date and will be announced by the Peterson Funeral Home.
