Maria Ines Beltran Goble

Jan. 22, 1928 to

Oct. 13, 2022

Maria Ines was born in Bogota, Colombia to Pedro Joaquin Beltran and Elvira Vaca. She was the youngest of four siblings: Soledad, Marco Emilio, (Aura), Aura Elvira (Laureano) and Luis Alberto (Myriam). She studied at the Nuestra Senora del Rosario High School, and then in Pedagogical University where she received her bachelors in linguistics and guidance counseling. She worked in renowned colleges in Bogota as an educator for a couple of years.

She didn’t stop there, oh no, she not only applied to a master’s program in the United States but she was awarded a scholarship as well from the University of Texas. She transferred to the University of Kansas where she received a masters degree in education and a master’s degree in linguistics.

Let’s think about this folks, a Colombian woman, doesn’t speak English, comes to America in the1950’s by herself, doesn’t know anyone and embarks on an educational journey that not only paved the way but impacted future generations to this day. That’s groundbreaking!

She met the love of her life, William Goble, on a blind date while she was a member of an International Club at Kansas University. They were married after her graduation and they had their first daughter, Sandra Newell (Rick). The three of them moved to Bogota, Colombia, where she accepted a government-solicited leadership position at a prestigious Colombian educational institution while her husband accepted a professorship at the National University. During this time, Maria had two more children: Glenda Ashkin (Joe) and William Jr.

In 1965, because of the political climate in Colombia, the family returned to the United States and settled in Silver Spring, Md. She continued her career as a teacher in Montgomery County, Md. In 1977, she returned to Bogota, Colombia, and continued her educational career until her retirement in 1994.]

In that time, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and committed her life to live the word of God. She served her community with great joy and passion, and we were able to witness the fruit of her labor.

In 1995. After her retirement she returned to the United States and settled in Sebring, Fla., where her sister and family were living. She became very involved as a leader of a spiritual group at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church where she strived to help the parishioners recognize the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior. She loved her volunteer work in the community.

In 2018, because of health issues she moved to Mayville, N.Y., where her daughter, Sandra, and granddaughter, Paula, cared for her.

She is survived by six grandchildren: Dennis Mitchell (Brianne), Paula Sullivan (Daniel), Griffin Ashkin (Lauren), Joseph Ashkin (Christina), Jase Ashkin and Trevor Goble and great grandchildren: Anne Mitchell, Jack Mitchell, Mia Ashkin and the joyful expectation of baby boy Ashkin on the way and a host of devoted nieces and nephews.

She loved to dance and sing. She was quite a competitor in card games, Dominos and Rubikube. She loved swimming in the ocean and enjoyed camping at the beach. Most of all she adored and cherished her family.

On behalf of her family, we want to thank Myriam, Clemencia, Lina Maria, Martha, Wendy, Carlene, Jessica and all the other friends who participated in her care. We want to really express our appreciation and gratitude for the love and joy given to her.

Calling hours from 11a.m.-1p.m. and Mass at 1p.m. will be held at St. Mary’s of Lourdes in Mayville, N.Y., on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022. Burial to follow immediately following at the Mayville Cemetery. Reception to follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Janette Seamans Branham Memorial Scholarship Fund (Highland County Bar Foundation, P.O. Box 2826, Lake Placid, FL, 33862) or the Mayville Rescue Squad (P.O. Box 2, Mayville, NY 14757).
