Rev. William ”Bill” Barrett

MAYVILLE — The Rev. William “Bill” Barrett, 89, of Mayville, N.Y., was called home to his Lord as he passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, Sept. 5, 2022.

He was born March 31, 1933, in Rochester, N.Y., the son of the late John F. And Therese Quigley Barrett.

Father Bill was ordained in June of 1959 as a Roman Catholic Priest for the Diocese of Rochester, N.Y., and served from 1959 to 2002. He served various parishes during that time including the chaplain of Newark State School. He retired to Mayville in 2002 and has assisted parishes in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties.

He enjoyed golf (he had a great swing) painting, reading, and traveling the world and particularly loved Italy, Ireland, and the Holy Land.

Father Bill was a Lions Club member, an honorary member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Lyons, N.Y., and a member of the Rotary Club of Rochester.

He is survived by one sister, Ann Barrett Walsh; one niece, Jill Vaillancourt; three nephews: John Walsh, Robert Walsh and Thomas Walsh; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew; William Walsh.

He was a dear and loving brother and uncle. He loved his family, his parish family, and his dog Jake.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, at the St. Mary of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mayville, N.Y. (22 East Chautauqua St). Father Bernard Nowak will be the celebrant. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery at a later date.
