Shirley M. Hayward

A lifelong area resident, she was born July 30, 1934 in Jamestown, the daughter of the late John and Edna Davenport Harriger.

Shirley was a 1952 graduate of Chautauqua High School and in earlier years was employed by the Bank of Jamestown. She was the librarian at the Ashville Free Library prior to retirement.

She was a member of the Ashville United Methodist Church and enjoyed spending time with family, scrapbooking, gardening and reading.

Surviving are two sons: Alan J. Hayward of Ashville, and Douglas (Eloisa) of Illinois; two daughters: Julie Garvey of Ashville, and Janine (Matthew) Johns of Washington, Pa.; five grandchildren: Chelsea Johns, Dylan Johns, Aaron Garvey, Tamara Hayward and Diego Lopez; a brother, Donald Harriger of California; two sisters: Ruth Adams of Lexington, S.C., and Margaret “Peggy” Harriger of Woodbridge, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John F. “Jack” Hayward, whom she married June 23, 1956; who died March 31, 2022; and a sister, Joanne Scolton.

A graveside memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 11, 2022, at 4 p.m. in Maple Grove Cemetery, Ashville.

Visitation will not be observed.
