John L. “Jack” Smith
John L. “Jack” Smith, 90, of Winch Road, Lakewood, N.Y., passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022, at his home.
John was born on Feb. 14, 1931, in Jamestown, N.Y., the son of the late Sheridan and Elma “McCarty” Smith.
John worked at Jamestown Lounge Company and for Chautauqua County Highway Department as a motor equipment operator. While working for Chautauqua County Highway Department he plowed snow and was the main operator of the Bemus Point/ Stow Ferry.
John was a former member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club and the Celoron Moose Club. He was a longtime member of the North Harmony Senior Citizens Center and served as a past president.
John enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, camping and traveling. He was a family man and his family was everything to him.
John is survived by two sons: Bradley (Sue) Smith of Celoron, N.Y. and Matt (Cathy) Smith of West Ellicott, N.Y.; his daughter, Adrian Smith-Madden of Lakewood, N.Y.; seven grandchildren:, Jason Holbrook, Lyndsi Larson, Amanda Larson, Emily Naetzker, Sheridan Smith, Alex (Lily) Svensen and Jamie (Joel) Armes; 18 great-grandchildren: Meridith Holbrook, Courtney Holbrook, Dillon Holbrook, Colton Holbrook, Xavier Jordan, Damon Demarco, Jaxson Demarco, Allie Caldwell, Brian Caldwell, Jr., Oscar Svensen, Chance Caldwell, Zackary Dahlbeck, Chanda Lynn, Hunter Germain, Blythe Schuchardt, Keegen Schuchardt, Alhaji Sheriff and Kaziah Sheriff; four great-great-grandchildren: Jack, Iris, Augustine and Teddy; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his wife, Harriet L. “Splink” Smith, whom he married on May 17, 1952 in Celoron, N.Y., and who died on May 15, 2017; two grandchildren: Gary Holbrook and Destiny Dahlbeck; and two brothers: Franklin Smith and Emory Smith.
A celebration of life will be held on the Bemus Point/Stow Ferry at a later date. Inurnment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Lakewood, N.Y.
