Ruby S. Burns

Ruby Fay Burns, 95, of Jamestown, N.Y., passed away on Jan. 17, 2022, at Gowanda Rehab and Nursing Center.

Ruby was born in Southard, Okla., on May 21, 1926. She attended Southard High School and graduated in 1944. Following high school, Ruby went to Oklahoma City to work as a secretary at Tinker Air Force base. In the summer of 1945, Ruby moved to Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla. In December of 1945, Ruby met a young pilot during his official base check-in and married him in January of 1946. After their marriage, Ruby and her husband moved to Falconer, N.Y. They were married for 56 years. Ruby worked for Dahlstrom Manufacturing in Jamestown from 1947-53, until the birth of their daughter.

As a member of Epworth Methodist Church, Ruby served as secretary for administrative council, president of WSCS, now known as United Methodist Women (UMW) and sang in the choir. After merging with Christ First United Methodist Church, Ruby remained a faithful member and served on a variety of committees and activities

Ruby volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Bank and WCA Hospital. She also served on the boards of the YWCA and Marvin House’s Junior and Senior boards. She was a member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun and the Bemus Point golf club where she enjoyed playing golf with her many friends until the age of 93.

Ruby and her loving husband, Ted were able to enjoy 18 winters in Florida. In addition, their love for their grandchildren: Greg and Kristi, knew no bounds. Friday nights were theirs and the kids. Ruby adored her family and her great-grandsons: Griffin, Brooks and Spencer, were priceless to her.

Ruby is survived by her daughter, Sheryl (Gene) Johnson; grandchildren: Greg (Tara) Johnson and Kristi (Chris) Booth; great-grandchildren: Griffin, Brooks and Spencer; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Ruby was predeceased by her husband, Theodore (Ted) Burns in 2002; her parents, Levi and Clara Sexton; and siblings: Elvin (Doris) Sexton, Helen (Jim) Roberson and Raymond (Peggy/Francis) Sexton; and nephew, William Lee Roberson.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the Falconer Funeral Home. The Rev. Sue Hadley, pastor of Christ First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Falconer.

Friends will be received by the family one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday in the funeral home.
