Janice Mae (Jan) Giltinan

Janice Mae (Jan) Giltinan, 78, of Edinboro, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, at the Juniper Village of Aurora in Aurora, Colo. She was born May 13, 1943, in Jamestown, N.Y., daughter of the late Lithner A. and Ruth (LaVigne) Peterson.

She graduated in 1961 from Southwestern Central High School, received her registered nursing diploma from Highland Hospital School of Nursing, Bachelors of Science in nursing and Masters of Science in nursing (in adult health) from Case Western Reserve University, and Masters of Science in nursing (in community health) from Edinboro University. She was also certified as a clinical specialist in Community Health Nursing.

Janice married David A. Giltinan on Feb. 4, 1967, in Lakewood, N.Y.

She was employed as staff nurse at the VNA in Cleveland, at Hamot Hos-pital in Erie, at Edinboro Medical Center in Edinboro for 15 years, and was for 18 years a member of the nursing faculty at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She was instrumental in establishing health promotion nursing centers in three different communities and was the author of several published journal articles.

In an article in the BTN Independent-Enterprise some years ago, the author described Janice’s “lifetime of involvement with others” as “one of the threads that make up the fabric which blankets our society in car-ing and compassion.” She was a member of the General McLane Drug Free Schools Community Advisory Committee, the Edinboro-McKean Juvenile Diversion Committee, the Edinboro Regional Community Resources Commit-tee, the Erie County Health Promotion Advisory Council, and other community and campus organizations and committees.

Janice was a longtime member of the Edinboro United Methodist Church, where she was involved in establishing that congregation’s Stephen Ministry Home Visitation program.

Her professional memberships included the Association of Community Health Educators, American Association of University Women, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society for Educators.

She enjoyed gardening, reading, and helping others. She assisted with numerous community health fairs and immunization programs. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and enjoyed numerous trips with immediate and extended family.

Preceding Janice in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, David A. Giltinan, and her son, Brian D. Giltinan.

She is survived by her son Kevin P. Giltinan and grandsons, Kagan and Declan, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Jennifer (Kissel) Giltinan and grandson Liam, of Hudson, Ohio; two sisters: Eleanor Jean Stringer and husband, George, of High Point, N.C., and Carolyn Cross and husband, Charles, of Concord, N.C.; a brother, Marshall Peterson and wife, Beverly, of York, S.C.; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nephews, and cousins; and special cousins: Nancy and David Karrfalt.
