Evelyn J. Beaver Hinman Whitney, 88, of Laska Circle, Jamestown, formerly of Randolph, passed away peacefully, after a courageous battle with dementia, on Friday (Oct. 15, 2021) at the Blair House Hospice in Warren, Pa.

She was born March 9, 1933, in South Dayton, N.Y., the daughter of the late Floyd Albert and Lucy Frances Reding Beaver.

Evelyn was a 1951 graduate of Randolph Central School. In addition to hav-ing been a home-maker and loving mother for her six children, she worked for Randolph Central School as an aide (1972-78) and the Randolph Union Free Academy as a teacher’s aide (1978-2001). During her career at the Randolph Academy, she served as treasurer for the NYSUT Association. She retired from the Randolph Academy in 2001, after 23 years.

She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Randolph. At St. Patrick’s, she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and served as secretary. She sang with the choir for many years, often enjoying the company of her children as fellow choir members. She also attended the Randolph United Presbyterian Church with her husband, Robert Whitney. She was a member of the Randolph American Legion Unit 181 Ladies Auxiliary and a former member of the Randolph Fire Company Auxiliary (president, vice-president and secretary). Evelyn enjoyed bowling, was a member of the Thursday Nite Ladies Bowling League, and for 15 years held the offices of vice president and secretary.

In addition to spending time with and caring for her large family, including her many nieces and nephews, Evelyn was passionate about cooking, entertaining, and gardening.

She is survived by her husband, Robert William Whitney of Jamestown; a daughter, Cynthia Louise (Mark) Anderson of Bergen, N.Y.; five sons: Thomas Robert (Patti) Hinman of Horseheads, Gary James (Rhonda) Hinman of Jamestown, Larry Allan (Jeanine) Hinman of Lakeview, N.Y., the Rev. Mark Joseph (Danielle) Hinman of Randolph, and Michael Wayne (Tanya) Hinman of Lakewood. She is also survived by four stepchildren: Bruce (Deb-by) Whitney of Downing-town, Pa,, Bill (Karen) Whitney of Bowie, Md., Mary Jo (Patrick) Munnelly of Bowie, Md., and Blair (Amy) Whitney of Lancaster, Pa. She has 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 12 step grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Hinman in 1997, whom she was married to for 44 years. She was also preceded in death by two brothers: Donald and Marvin Beaver.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m on Monday, October 25 in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Randolph. The Rev. Joseph Janaczek will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Randolph.

The family will receive relatives and extended family from 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 24 from the VanRensselaer & Son Funeral Home, 14 Church St., Randolph.
