Lucy Ann Rider

ELLINGTON — Lucy Ann Rider, 78, of East Main Street, Ellington, passed away, Wednesday (May 12, 2021) in her home, while under the care of Chautauqua Hospice and her siblings by her side.

She was born July 16, 1942 in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Cleland E. and Edith L. (Strom) Vollentine.

Lucy was a 1960 graduate of Falconer High School and received her degree in Nursing from the WCA Hospital School of Nursing and also a degree in Business and Accounting from the Edison Community College in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Following a career in nursing at the Gowanda Psychiatric Center in Gowanda, NY, Lucy went on to work as the accounting manager for Sanibel Moorings Properties in Sanibel FL., retiring in 2005.

A talented vocalist and musician, Lucy had spent most of her adult life in a variety of organizations. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church chorus in Jamestown, a 30 year member of the Sweet Adeline’s International, The Chautauqua Institution Sunday and Motet Choirs, the Mozart Club and Chorus, Chautauqua Chamber Singers, Community Music Project, she also played the Cello and performed with the Jamestown Area Community Orchestra (JACO).

Lucy was also a member of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, (CLSC) Chautauqua Literary Scientific Circle (class of 2013). The WCA Hospital Alumni Association, Randolph American Legion Post 181, and a lifetime member of the Ellington Rod & Gun Club. She also enjoyed restoring her home, gardening, reading and a lifetime of playing piano.

She is survived by her two sons, Daniel J. O’Brien of Kennedy and Perry D. O’Brien and wife Tracy of Bordentown, NJ; a sister, Cleone Fox and husband Thomas of Conewango Valley; a brother, Rex Vollentine and wife Mary of Winchetser, NH; as well as nieces and nephews.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday (May 15, 2021) in the VanRensselaer & Son Funeral Home, 14 Church Street, Randolph, with services to follow at 1 p.m. The Rev. Jennifer Delahoy will officiate. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery, Ellington.
