Richard K. Johnson

Richard K. Johnson, 91, of Cassadaga, NY, passed away on April 15 to be with his one true love, Joyce, in heaven. Richard led an active life and was well known in the Cassadaga community. He married his wife, Joyce Johnson of 62 years, in 1950 and enjoyed a wonderful relationship. They had two children; Richard Johnson Jr. and Kathie Johnson Chaffee. Dick and Joyce loved to travel and went all over our country and Canada. They got interested in our local Native Americans and spent many hours working with their friend who was an archaeologist. Richard joined his father Kermit and his uncle Gilbert in 1964 when they built the Shur Fine Store on Rt. 60 in Cassadaga. He worked in the meat department with his father for many years.

Richard loved to hunt and fish, taking the whole family and friends far up into Canada to camp and fish. He loved to backpack up into the Rocky Mountains to go Elk hunting. Alaska was one of their favorite destinations and they made it to that state three times. Dick also loved to fly and had his own airplane for many years. He loved to take his wife up with him and even his children when they got old enough.

Education was important to him and he served as PTA president for many years and then went on to become a Cassadaga Valley School District school board member. He also led the Kiwanis Club and was very active in the club. He liked to run the hotdog stand at local events and could be found behind the counter with a smile on his face.

Richard is survived by: his son, Richard (April) Johnson Jr. and his daughter, Kathie (Bion) Chaffee. He had several grandchildren: Ken (Jason) Johnson, Chris (Renee) Johnson and Jonathan (Catherine) Easton. His granddaughter, Shari Robbins, died in 2016. His great-grandchildren are: Brenden and MacKenzie Robbins, Chelsea and Colton Johnson and Donald Easton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Johnson’s memory to the Cassadaga Fire Dept., 122 Mill Street, Cassadaga, N.Y. 14718
