Lloyd Herbert Ames, 84, of Columbia, Tennessee, formerly of Painesville, Ohio and Hartfield, New York, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. He passed peacefully from his earthly home on an afternoon spent with loved ones, including his nephew Dan H. Ames and his nephew's wife Diane B. AmesÖan afternoon in which the hours were filled with Christian music; prayer; and words of love, support and encouragement.
Lloyd was born May 17, 1936 in Hartfield, New York to Herbert Dixon Ames and Edith Oleva Shepard Ames. He had one sister, Evelyn Oleva Ames Hotchkiss; and two brothers, Maurice Emerson Ames and Allan Garfield Ames. Lloyd was never married, but often spoke of "the one that got away."
He graduated from Mayville Central School in 1955. He worked in furniture manufacturing for Kling Factories at their Mayville, New York facility before starting his lifelong career on the railroad. He became a conductor for the New York Central Railroad and worked on the railroad until his retirement from Conrail.
Lloyd was a born again Christian known for his outgoing, friendly, cheerful personality. He was a faithful supporter of his local Baptist church, often working as a greeter and usher, and actively participating in many other church activities throughout his life. He easily made many friends and was known for happening upon those friends in virtually every restaurant, shop, city or town that he visited. He loved trains. He was an avid reader of train magazines and collected railroad memorabilia. During and after his employment at the railroad, Lloyd became a marketing business entrepreneur. This supported his love for travel; meeting and working with friends, both old and new; and the pursuit of personal achievement, consistent with his gregarious, self-motivated persona. He also enjoyed perusing antique shops and yard sales looking for a bargain he couldn't live without. After retirement, he loved to spend time at the Senior Center and they loved having him there. He won his share of bingo prizes and became an ace at Wii Bowling. Everyone wanted to be on his bowling team. Who wouldn't since it was not uncommon for him to bowl a score of 300.
Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Edith Ames, his sister Evelyn Hotchkiss, as well as his brothers Allan Ames and Maurice Ames. He has no family survivors, but lives on in the hearts of his nephews, nieces, other relatives, and his many friends.
Consistent with Lloyd's wishes, no visitation or funeral services will be held. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery in Mayville, New York, surrounded by a prayerful gathering of loving family.
