Wayne A. Schuver Sr.

Wayne A. Schuver Sr., 82, passed away peacefully with his wife and son, Wayne Jr., by his side, on Feb. 19, 2021, in Sebring, Florida. He was born May 20, 1938 in Jamestown, New York, and was a 1956 Graduate of Jamestown High School.

He served in the United States Naval Reserves from 1957 to 1963. He was a former member of the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 145 F. & A. M. in Jamestown, New York, the FOE Eagles 2145 of Jamestown and the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. He lived in Jamestown most of his life, where he and his wife, the former Mary Lou Ulrich, raised three sons.

In 2016 they moved to Frostproof, Florida where they made many wonderful friends. He was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Frostproof, Florida. Prior to his retirement, he owned and operated Nelson’s Pie Kitchen in Lakewood, New York and later went into business with Ulrich’s Bakery. He retired from SYSCO Food Service in 1986.

While there, he was a Union Steward for Local Teamsters 649. Wayne managed a Little League Baseball team for 12 years and always gave all his players a chance to play. He felt the most successful season his team ever had, was winning one game, and losing one game from every team in the league. He was the first manager to draft a girl to his team. He coached the West Side Panthers of the Jamestown Midget Football League for several years and helped coach the East Side Eagles. He brought the Panthers to a Championship as well as earning the Coach of the Year award. He also coached a Women’s Softball City Recreation Team. He was an avid bowler, and he bowled several “700” series.

He loved to play golf and had three “holes-in-one” in his lifetime. The Jamestown Senior Men’s Traveling Golf League was a special part of his life. He golfed in many tournaments with his brother Marvin Schuver, at the Conewango Valley Country Club, winning the Senior Member-Guest Club Championship in 2002 and in 2005. Wayne was a true sports fan and loved watching sports on TV. He was a “die-hard” Mets and Cleveland Browns fan.

He was preceded in death by his father, George A. Schuver in 1971; mother, Myrtle T. Halstenson Schuver in 2005; and brother, G. Marvin Schuver in 2012.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years; three sons, Wayne A. Schuver Jr. (Tina) of Macon, Ga., William A. Schuver, DC (Dee Dee) of Lakewood, NY, Woodrow A. Schuver of Charlotte, NC; and a very close niece, Debbie Wilhelm (Jeff) of Jamestown, NY. He had seven grandchildren, Wayne A. He also had eleven great grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews. Wayne will be remembered for his great sense of humor, quick wit and the love of his family and friends.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church in Frostproof with Pastor Debbie Mak officiating. There will also be a celebration of life in Jamestown, N.Y., at a later date.
