MAYVILLE -- Edwin S. Cannon, 91, of Mayville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020, at his home with family at his side.
He was born Jan. 14, 1929, in Jamestown, N.Y., the son of the late Edwin R. Cannon and Mildred Samson Cannon.
Ed grew up in Ellington, N.Y., and graduated from Falconer Central School, class of 1947. After graduation Ed moved to Detroit and worked at General Motors. Ed was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War while stationed in the Philippines before being honorably discharged. He returned home and worked for the New York State DOT in Mayville, where he worked on the sign crew and was a snow control dispatcher.
Ed was a life member of the Mayville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8647, where he served many years as chaplain, and the William L. Travis Post 493 American Legion, where he had been a member for over 60 years. He was a charter member of the Ellington Rod and Gun Club and had negotiated the purchase of the property where the club now stands. He had attended Mayville First Baptist Church until becoming housebound.
He enjoyed being in the outdoors, cutting firewood, hunting and gardening. For many years, Ed, with two of his brothers, had produced and sold Cannon Bros. Maple Syrup. Ed and his wife, Mary had toured several Civil War battlefields after retirement and he also enjoyed discussing World War II history. His family was important to him and he felt very thankful and blessed to be able to spend his final months at home, cared for by his family.
Ed is survived by his wife; Mary Ann Dearing Cannon, whom he married June 9, 1956, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mayville, three sons: Edwin M. (Cheryl) Cannon of Mayville, Timothy S. (Coleen) Cannon of Mayville and Randolph "Randy" J. (Jackie) Cannon of Mayville, five grandchildren; Lee (Jason) Donato, Michael (Melanie) Cannon, Hillary Nelson, Ethan Nelson and Alicia Cannon; six great-grandchildren: Taylor, Peyton and Gage Donato and Avery, Sidney and Jackson Cannon; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his three brothers: Laurence, Robert and Charles Cannon.
The funeral will be held at noon on Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S. Erie St.). The Rev. Daniel Prewitt will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery where military honors will be presented by the Mayville Legion and the Mayville Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until noon prior to the service, at the funeral home. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, face masks must be worn in the funeral home and social distancing observed.
The family would like to give special thanks to his caregivers Mercedes and Tina for their compassionate care during his final months.
