On Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020, Daryl Ray Samuelson, loving father of two children, passed away at the age of 83.
Daryl was born Aug. 10, 1937. to Lillie Victoria Swanson and Raymond Frank Samuelson in Jamestown, N.Y.
He received a degree in English from Upsala College in East Orange, N.J. On June 19, 1959, he married Janet Christina Christianson, whom he loved deeply and to whom he was married for nearly 40 years. They raised a son, Stephen Daryl, and a daughter, Vicki Kristina.
Daryl worked in sales and management positions from Bradford, Pa. to Minneapolis, Minn. and Kansas City, Mp., working for such companies as Control Data Corporation and Dale Carnegie Training, conducting management seminars and selling public speaking and corporate leadership courses. He would at times encourage his children with Carnegie's philosophies at home, bursting out energetically with "Act Enthusiastic and You'll Be Enthusiastic!" He wrote in his journal about his career that he was "grateful to the people who helped me to be productive and perform well."
He loved reading about history as well as crime novels and western fiction. He was a skilled orator and participated in Toastmasters for several years. He also loved to write, journal and reflect on the meaning and purpose of his life. He loved jokes, played basketball, golf and tennis well into adulthood, was an accomplished bridge, cribbage and poker player, loved animals and music, and had a beautiful singing voice. He was a Christian and read the Bible often, connecting its principles to his life.
In the year prior to his passing his children and he got together on Chautauqua Lake, relaxing, reminiscing about the past, singing songs and otherwise just enjoying each others' company.
Daryl was preceded in death by his mother, Lillie, his father, Raymond, his stepmother, Nina, and his cousin, Paul.
He is survived by his two children (and their spouses): Stephen (Linda), Vicki (Jan) his six grandchildren (and their spouses): Jessica (Michael), Rachel, John (Alexandra), Alex, Kaia and Kell; and a great-grandson, Henry (son of John and Alexandra).
One of his favorite quotes was by Theodore Roosevelt: "It is far better to dare mighty things than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory or defeat."
