Gretchen J. Hudson

Gretchen J. Hudson, 90, formerly of Durant Avenue, Jamestown, passed away at 8:05 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020, in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center.

An area resident for most of her life, she was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Warren, Pa., the adopted daughter of the late Walter V. and Mabel Graham Johnson.

Gretchen was a 1948 graduate of Jamestown High School.

Before her retirement, she was the office/credit manager for the former Regal Lumber Company in Falconer, N.Y./ for 12 years. In earlier years. she had worked with her former husband at Hudson’s Garage. Following her retirement. she worked for the Joint Neighborhood Project.

She was very active in the community volunteering her time with the Multiple Sclerosis Society, serving on the board of the YWCA, was past chairman of the Country Capers and was involved in the Fenner Elementary School PTA when her children were in school.

She was a very generous person and took great pride in giving to the indigent and less fortunate families in the Jamestown area. She always had an ear to listen, and lived her life by saying, if you want to see someone or do something for someone don’t wait, do it now while you’re thinking of it.

Surviving are a daughter, Amy Hudson of Jamestown; a grandson, Daniel J. Cardinale of Jamestown; a granddaughter; Erika Ann (Cory) Blake of Warren, Pa.; her nephews: Steve (Cindy) Johnson and Todd (Lori) Johnson; many great and great-great nieces and nephews; as well as many cousins throughout the United States. Three close friends who were like daughters to her: Sandy Andriaccio, MoMo Sutton and Debbie Carson and her lifelong friends: Joanne, Marlene and Sally.

Her family would like to thank the many caregivers who loved and cared so much for Gretchen over the past 10 years, especially the staff and social workers at the Lutheran.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Hudson, who died in 2019; and a brother, R. Donald Johnson, who died in 1981; and a nephew, Kim Johnson who died in 2003.

A private memorial service will be held in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel S. Rumfelt, chaplain of the Lutheran Home will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020, in the Lind Funeral Home. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, social distancing will be observed and masks must be worn while inside the funeral home.
