Millicent A. “Millie” Matson

Millicent A. “Millie” Matson, 88, of Church Street, Randolph, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday (Oct, 1, 2020) with her family at her side.

Mrs. Matson was born Dec, 24, 1931m in Medina, N.Y., the daughter of the late Dr. Ross H. and Hazel (Oderkirk) Arnett Sr. Growing up in Medina, N.Y., she was a 1949 graduate of Medina Central School, where she and her husband, Bob, attended school together since kindergarten. Millie additionally attended the National College of Education in Evanston, Ill., receiving a degree in elementary education and later attended Buffalo State Teachers College in Buffalo. Her proudest moment at Buff State, was singing in the college choir and performing at Kleinhans Music Hall.

Millie was a life member of the Randolph United Presbyterian Church, where she had taught Sunday school and was active in the Presbyterian Womens Association. Family was everything to Millie. Spending time with her children and grandchildren was a favorite part of her life. Outside of family, she had adopted her neighbor’s dog, Tinker Belle Van-Rensselaer and the two were often seen on their daily walks. She also enjoyed baking, cooking, keeping a tidy home and taking painting classes with Helen Gilbert for many years.

Millie will be remembered as sweet, kind, loving and always willing to share her smile and lovely home with others, In addition to being a homemaker to her husband and six children, she ambitiously assisted her husband, Bob with Matson Auction. She had also owned and operated the Village Boutique in Randolph for 10 years.

Following retirement, she and Bob traveled abroad, but boating was their true passion. They traveled by boat for many years on the BIG CIRCLE, through the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi, the Erie Canal, Atlantic Ocean, Intra coastal Waterway and into the Canadian Trent-Severn Waterway. They also enjoyed their many friends while wintering in Punta Gorda, Fla. Surviving are her husband 69 years, Robert W. Matson, whom she married on Feb. 3, 1951, in the Medina United Methodist Church; a daughter, Elizabeth M. “Betsy” Jenkins and husband, Jim of Lilburn, Ga.; five sons: Robert Arnett Matson and wife, Shanna of Hamburg, N.Y., Timothy T. Matson and wife, Debbie of St. Louis, Mo., David A. Matson and wife, Brenda of Lake View, N.Y., and twins; James W. Matson and wife, Susan and Douglas R. Matson, all of Randolph. She is additionally survived by 11 grandchildren, whom she adored; Eliza, Robert E. (Shannon), Noa, Mallory, Jessica, Allison Fitzgerald-Matson (Siobhan), Sophia, Katherine, Emily, Evan and Dylan Matson; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Dr. Ross H. Arnett Jr. on July 16, 1999; and a sister, Georgiana Pound on April 19, 2014.

The family will receive relatives and friends for a walk through visitation from 4-7 p.m., Monday Oct. 5, 2020, in the Van Rensselaer & Son Funeral Home, 14 Church St., Randolph. MASKS ARE REQUIRED and social distancing will be observed.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday from the Randolph United Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Molly Golando will officiate. Masks Required. Burial will follow in the Randolph Cemetery.
