Johnana M. Ekstrom

Johnana M. Ekstrom, 73, of 713 Warren Road, Frewsburg, passed away at home on Monday, Oct. 5, 2020. She was born in Jamestown on Dec. 2, 1946, to Harold and Virginia Stoddard Allison.

She was a 1965 graduate of Frewsburg Central School and a 1969 graduate of Syracuse University, majoring in fabric design. Through the years, she was employed by various kitchen and bath design businesses, however, in 1989, she established, in Frewsburg, Johnana’s Kitchen and Design. Her passion for lovely, comfortable, efficient, and classy kitchen design-all hand drawn-combined with her insight into the wishes and needs of her customers garnered her a thriving business for many years.

While Johnana worked to meet and sense the needs of others in business, her true delight was in family and friends and entertainment. The qualities of “hostess extraordinaire and compassionate giver” combined for she and George together to provide a haven of hospitality, comfort, and exceedingly good humor (with a generous dose of sarcasm) to countless numbers. Believing that her boomer life, growing up in the ‘burg with siblings and cousins, aunts and uncles, was a “charmed life,” and she extended that charm to many.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, George Ekstrom, whom she married in Frewsburg on July 12, 1969; her son, Andrew (Merideth); granddaughters: Amber Mobley (Marc Manross), Jessica Ekstrom (Jake Bliss); and great-grandchildren: Mathew and Samantha Mobley, Jupiter Manross, and Drew Terry. In addition, she is survived by her sister and best friend, Michele Sandberg, brother Tom (Sharon), and their respective children-Adam Petzold, Chad Allison (Wendy), and Kate Conti (Jayme); and an aunt, Marion Allison. As was the case for Johnana and her cousins, “Aunt Nan’s” legacy reaches to cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews!

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, service will be private with the Rev. Phil Roushey, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, officiating.

The family will receive friends for a walkthrough visitation from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday in the Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg.

Memorial may be made to the Frewsburg Fire Company, P.O. Box 590, Frewsburg, NY 14738.

Condolences may be sent to Johnana’s family at petersonfh.net.
