Mary Lou Holmes
Mary Lou Holmes, 72, formerly of Lower Bush Road, Kennedy, N.Y., passed away on Sunday, May 31st at Doctors Hospital in Sarasota, Fla.
A lifelong area resident, she was born Jan. 2, 1948, in Jamestown, N.Y., and was the daughter of Ralph and Carrie Gattuso D’Angelo.
She was a 1965 graduate of Jamestown High School and a graduate of Jamestown Community College’s School of Nursing. Mary Lou received her Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree from the University at Buffalo School of Nursing.
Before her retirement in 2003, Mary Lou was employed as a registered nurse for 35 years at the former WCA Hospital, mainly on 3B. She also worked as an oncology nurse. Always maintaining her sense of humor, Mary Lou’s favorite saying when she administered injections was, “Tis better to give than to receive.”
She will be remembered as a loving wife and mother who cherished spending time with her family. Mary Lou enjoyed traveling, trips to see her daughter, Carrie Beth in Maryland, and spending winters in Arizona and Florida. She loved playing bingo, and was an avid reader. She had a warm and inviting personality that made people feel comfortable and accepted, and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Edwin O. Holmes, whom she married on Oct. 21, 1972; and her daughter, Carrie Beth (Alex Metcalf) Holmes. Her siblings include: Vincent J. (Dianne) D’Angelo, Ralph N. (Wanda) D’Angelo, and her sister, Grace Ann (Dr. Charles) Mistretta. Mary Lou is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas A. D’Angelo, and her sister-in-law, Sue Ann P. D’Angelo.
